We were traveling to an area I had hunted last year when I noticed a nice draw that still had water in it. Easy to spot with all the lush green trees and grass against a mostly brown landscape. We started working the draw as we headed up into higher, more rocky country where we were hoping to find some chukars.
Right out of the gate Kati was showing signs of her maturity. She was covering typical areas that would hold birds, as well as working into the wind and keeping track of where I was and what I was doing. We were right on target to having a great opener to the new season. It wasn't long before we broke up a covey of quail and drove them further up the draw where we continued to pick up any stragglers in the sage brush as we climbed our way to higher elevations. It was cooler then it had been, but we still took water breaks often, and stopped for a nice lunch where we shared a pb&j.
It's a beautiful landscape when you get up high where you can't see any roads, any civilization, or hear any sounds of rumbling cars echoing through the canyons. It's something that most won't ever get to experience...one of the perks of enjoying life in the outdoors.
We didn't run into any chukars or huns in our 5 mile trip, which still baffles me, but we did manage to pick up some quail. Of course it was a great season opener for us, and it was reassuring to see that we both were still working together after being out of the game for so many.....or should I say TOO MANY, months.
Stay tuned...this is only the start of the season.
